Since, I live in India which has broken infrastructure and everyday life feels difficult to live by, I keep thinking about possible reasons for the current state of India. One of the reasons for this situation, I feel is not having enough love and empathy towards other fellow beings. I will try to share my thoughts on how I feel, having love and empathy can transform society as a whole.
First, I will try to give context of what might have shaped my thoughts. I am a software engineer by profession, now in my 40’s. The whole of my life, I have spent in India, keenly observing how the Indian society behaves. When I was in my 20’s, spent most of my time exploring the world, I mean meeting new people at workplace, making friends, exploring different places, etc. Got married in my early 30’s and since then I have been a husband and father to a baby girl. The 20’s I have spent in Mumbai-Pune cities, the 30’s I have spent in Bengaluru.
Now, that I have given the context of what might have influenced my experiences, I would try to share my 2 cents. For a short 10 days, I had visited Dubai. It gave me a trailer about how it feels to live in a developed world. Broad, clean roads, spacious and well maintained footpath/walkpath. No noise pollution, clean air and food, etc. I was amazed at the experience. People spend less time in traffic and even at the end of the day, feel energetic. In contrast, living in India feels like being in a mess. No planning of the city or road infrastructure, no walkpath, garbage everywhere, no lane discipline while driving on the road, etc, etc.
I feel that being lazy, selfish or self centered creates such kind of society. Let me try to bring in Love and Empathy in this context and see how the society will change if people start having love and empathy in their hearts. A husband with love and empathy will start helping wife in her household chores, taking care of kids, etc. Once, we have empathy, we will not spoil our neighborhood. Instead of blaming our previous generation for not created enough infrastructure or opportunities for us, we will take responsibility and start building better infrastructure, beautiful city, places and create better jobs so that the next generation will have a better life than us. The pain which we have gone through we will not want our next generation to go through that pain.
Once, we bring Love and Empathy in our hearts, we become a bit elevated soul. We feel positive, energized. It will feel like we are spiritually elevated and doing the job of God. We will feel like we are children of God and doing the work for the God’s sake. Money and power will feel like tools given to us by God to make the world a better place. We will stop objectifying women. Lust will lose its power upon us because we will start feeling there is a better reason for our existence, to fulfill God’s work i.e. to spread love and kindness in the world.
We only know about financial poverty but there are people who are poor in other ways. There are people who have poor health, some people lack true friends, some lack relationships, some don’t have love family, some lack empathy, some lack intelligence, etc. etc. So everyone is lacking something or something else. Let us bring Love and Empathy in our hearts and share whatever we have with others and make the world a beautiful place to live in for everyone!!
